Cubic Zirconia Jewelry

KCI Cubic Zirconia Jewelry

Cubic Zirconia is the cubic chrystalline form of zirconium dioxide. The synthesized material is hard, optically flawless and usually colorless. Because of its low cost, durability and visual likeness to diamond, it has remained an important competitor of diamonds since its commercial production began in 1976. In 1892 cubic zirconia (Zirconium Oxide) was first discovered in its natural state. This monoclinic mineral was known as baddelleyite. Since finding cubic zirconia in its natural state is so rare, only cubic zirconia made in the laboratory is found in finished jewelry.

In the 1980s Swarovski & Co., an Austrian leaded crystal manufacturer began producing cubic zirconia for mass consumption. They also produced color cubic zirconia by adding different elements such as iron, nickel, cerium oxide, copper and other elements.
